James Gunn recently congratulated ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ on its box office success through social media. The DC Studios co-CEO, who directed the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trilogy and several Stan Lee cameos for Marvel, wrote:
“Wow. Over 206 million for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ this weekend. So happy for Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Shawn Levy, Kevin, Lou, all my friends over at Marvel Studios, and movie-goers! Congrats!”
Gunn’s comment came after a joke about him and the DCU became a topic among fans. Watch out for spoilers ahead!

Deadpool Mocking James Gunn And The DCU
Wade Wilson searched for a Wolverine Variant and encountered a version played by Henry Cavill in the beginning of the film. He called him ‘Cavillrine’ and said the MCU would ‘treat him a lot better than they did across the street.’
This referred to Cavill’s firing from the DC Studios. The actor reprised the Superman role for ‘Black Adam’s’ post-credits scene in 2022 only to be replaced by David Corenswet after Gunn and Peter Safran’s decision to reboot the franchise.
Digs And References To Other Productions
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ took digs at many names and productions, including Fox and Marvel themselves. The film featured cameos and appearances from several heroes and villains, as well.
Dafne Keen (X-23/Laura), Jennifer Garner (Elektra), Wesley Snipes (Blade), and Aaron Stanford (Pyro) returned to reprise their roles alongside Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Emma Corrin joined as Cassandra Nova and Matthew Macfadyen as Paradox.
Shawn Levy directed a script written by Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells.
