James Gunn recently made some comparisons between his work on ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ movies and his new project, ‘Creature Commandos.’
Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that both teams feature unusual characters, but ‘Creature Commandos’ stands out because it doesn’t have the same level of sentimentality as ‘Guardians.’ “[Guardians are] all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures,” Gunn explained.
Gunn also talked about the interesting relationship between Frankenstein and the Bride, noting that it draws more from Mary Shelley’s classic novel than the movie versions. “Frankenstein is this incredibly well-spoken intellectual but is still driven by his rage and his anger and his inability to really be a human being, and the inability for the one that he loves not loving him back,” he said. “That’s what drives him.”
The characters in ‘Creature Commandos’ include Doctor Phosphorus, Nina Mazursky, Frankenstein, the Bride, G.I. Robot, and Weasel (who also appeared in ‘The Suicide Squad’). Leading the team is Rick Flag Sr.
‘Creature Commandos’ is the first project in the new DC Universe timeline led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. This new timeline will continue next year with the release of a ‘Superman’ movie, which finished filming in July. Both ‘Creature Commandos’ and ‘Superman’ will feature crossover elements.
Other DC projects coming soon include ‘Lanterns,’ with rumors that Josh Brolin might be cast as Hal Jordan. Outside the main timeline, the final season of ‘Superman & Lois,’ ‘The Penguin’ spinoff from ‘The Batman,’ and ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ are also in development.
‘Creature Commandos’ is set to premiere on Max on December 5, 2024.
