Responding to fan questions on Threads, James Gunn recently confirmed that the upcoming second season of the John Cena-led series, ‘Peacemaker,’ will officially be part of the DCU canon.
As per Fandomwire, Gunn said in a now-deleted post on Threads that ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 will be canon. Gunn’s announcement contrasts with the first season’s standing, which he declared as not canon to the DCU:
“Season one isn’t canon …”
When a fan asked the reason why ‘Peacemaker’s first season isn’t canon if all the events still happen in the DCU, Gunn responded:
“Because all the events didn’t happen in the DCU. I mean, most do, but there are a few things outside the lines, so I can’t say it’s pure canon.”
Gunn also updated fans, saying that they will shoot ‘Peacemaker’ and ‘Superman’ simultaneously. His full statement is as follows:
“… To answer your follow-up questions: yes, we’ll be shooting ‘Superman’ & ‘Peacemaker’ simultaneously; yes, I’ve written all the episodes; but no, in the interest of getting the show out there, I won’t be able to direct them all (only some); & yes, ‘Waller’s still happening & Jeremy & Christal are hard at work writing great stuff, but the schedule was impacted by the strikes so it’ll come after ‘Peacemaker.'”
During his busy schedule, Gunn plans to direct several episodes of ‘Peacemaker’ season two. This upcoming season promises to follow events after the ‘Superman’ film, but it will also feature elements from the first season, although only selectively.
Fans Are Left Confused
This decision also led to mixed reactions among fans. Promoting the second season as canon while sidelining the first has raised questions about the continuation of the shared universe. Fans voiced their concerns on Twitter, with some fans joking about the DCU’s dependency on Gunn’s creative whims, while others expressed disinterest in the direction of the universe:
“The DCU literally rides on whatever James Gunn feels like doing on any given day. No type of concrete structure at all.”
Serving as the co-chief of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, Gunn aims to reboot the universe previously known as the DCEU. This new phase, dubbed ‘Gods and Monsters,’ includes projects such as ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘The Authority,’ ‘Superman,’ ‘Waller,’ and ‘Lanterns.’
Gunn’s previous works, including ‘The Suicide Squad’ and its spinoff series ‘Peacemaker,’ were released before his tenure as DC Studios head began. Despite their non-canonical status, these projects were well-received. The spinoff series ‘Waller’ is currently in development, though its production was reportedly delayed due to strikes.
