Since taking on his role at DC, James Gunn has frequently answered questions from the public, even on Threads. When asked why ‘Clayface’s storyline (set to air in 2026) is the third production in the premiere series instead of focusing on a bigger hero like ‘The Flash,’ Gunn clarified that everything depends on having a completed and viable script.
“Because of the number one rule here at DC: No movie will be greenlit before the script is ready. And (Mike Flanagan’s) script was ready,” he said. Gunn then went on to mention that a movie about ‘The Flash’ could take a while for the DCU. “And as for the Flash we’re holding a beat on development.” No project involving the hero has been announced officially yet, although ‘Teen Titans’ is in development as a feature film. In the comics, Wally West was a founding member of the team, but it’s unclear if the character will be on the roster for the film (or if the movie will get made at all).
It’s not entirely surprising that Gunn expressed hesitancy regarding ‘The Flash,’ given that the 2023 film starring Ezra Miller was a major box office flop. Additionally, the production was plagued by delays and controversies, including the actor’s legal troubles, which frequently made headlines.
Despite Gunn’s response, the public remains curious about the character’s casting. While it’s certain that ‘The Flash’ will eventually appear in the DCU, the question of who will portray him lingers. Grant Gustin is one of the fan-favorite names that continues to be suggested as an excellent choice.
