In a new interview with io9, James Gunn said ‘Superman’ was tough but crucial for the DCU.
‘Creature Commandos’ is streaming now, but all attention will be on ‘Superman’ next year. If audiences reject DC, the reboot might fail, especially with competition from ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and ‘Jurassic World Rebirth.’
“I’m miserable,” the director recently said of making ‘Superman.’ “Really I’m miserable. But hopefully, it’s for the greater good.”
The site says there are plans for ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ ‘Peacemaker’ season 2, and ‘Lanterns.’ But if ‘Superman’ fails, it might end the DCU. Gunn explained, “A lot [is riding on ‘Superman’]. I mean, We’re not going to just keep making movies.”
This is concerning but not surprising. While it’s hard to think a ‘Superman’ movie could fail, past films like ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and ‘Justice League’ may have hurt his popularity. It’s unclear if he’s still a big box-office draw.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Gunn talked about the importance of casting David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. He said, “I just wanted to go for who was the best Superman. A lot of people auditioned, and the weird thing is I was so crazily nervous about getting Superman ready, on very first day of the tapes coming in, I had seen [David] Corenswet in ‘Pearl.'”
He continued, “So I said, ‘Get him on, get him on.’ I said, get him on the tape. And then the very first day came in David’s tape and Rachel’s tape, and I saw both of those and I went, ‘Oh my God, we’re going to be okay.’ Because both of these people are amazing. There were other really good actors for both of those roles, but at the end of the day, it was both of them as individuals.”
Gunn recently announced that the trailer for ‘Superman’ was watched over 250 million times in its first 24 hours, making it the most-viewed trailer in DC and Warner Bros. history. This beats the record set by the ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ trailer with 167 million views and ‘Inside Out 2’ with 157 million views.
