James Gunn has a new vision for his possible DC projects.
“We’re not about that. We’re not about ‘See how it does,'” the director replied when asked by Collider if the new DCU will include R-rated movies. “We’ve got one opportunity to take these characters and really press forward and do what we believe.”
He added, “I am a great believer that if we tell good, authentic stories if a movie does well or doesn’t do as well, if you keep with that same philosophy, that you’re going to build a universe that people are going to love and want to be a part of for a long time.”
“It’s not about testing out to see if this thing works. It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that. If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care — whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do,” Gunn further shared.
Gunn recently shared the first DCU projects and hinted at more to come. The new DC era kicks off soon with the animated ‘Creature Commandos,’ followed by ‘Superman: Legacy’ in July 2025.
The director also confirmed the first five releases: ‘Peacemaker’ season 2, HBO’s ‘Lanterns,’ ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ ‘Superman: Legacy,’ and ‘Creature Commandos.’ He teased other future projects and noted the Green Lantern series will debut around the ‘Supergirl’ movie in 2026.
He explained, “It’s really ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Superman,’ ‘Peacemaker,’ ‘Lanterns,’ ‘Supergirl.’ And then some things people don’t know.”
The first DCU movies and TV shows are mostly what was expected. Some changes happened, like Viola Davis’ ‘Waller’ series being delayed, while ‘Lanterns’ and ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 moved faster.
John Cena’s ‘Peacemaker’ and David Corenswet’s ‘Superman’ will both be released in 2025, with Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. appearing in ‘Creature Commandos’ and those two films. ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be released in June 2026, with ‘Lanterns’ coming out around the same time.
‘The Batman – Part II’ is separate from the DCU, releasing in October 2026. Other DCU projects, like ‘The Brave and the Bold’ and ‘Booster Gold,’ might come in 2027.
