James Marsters Shares If He’ll Accept To Reprise Brainiac Role In Smallville’s Animated Revival

There are rumors about ‘Smallville’ continuing as an animated show.

‘Smallville’ star James Marsters is willing to return as Brainiac for a potential animated revival.

“Definitely,” the actor told Screen Rant on whether he’d be down for a sequel. “I think that Smallville was the most intelligent character version of Superman that I’ve ever seen. Superman is a very difficult character to write because he’s invulnerable. Heroism is when I help somebody, even when I have to sacrifice something to help them.”

Marsters added, “That’s the definition, and when you have a hero movie, you have the very most exciting part [which] is when the hero has to risk his life to save someone or help someone. And that’s just impossible with Superman. He’s invulnerable. He’s going to be fine unless you pull out Kryptonite. Every Superman movie does that.”

Marsters first played the bad guy Brainiac. Later, he returned as ‘Brainiac 5,’ a new version of his character. As a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes, he took Clark Kent on a time travel trip to show him his future as the Man of Steel.

The actor wants to come back as Brainiac for a ‘Smallville’ animated sequel, but there are still some problems. The sequel has been in the works for a few years, with Tom Welling and other original stars ready to return. However, Welling recently said that the plans for the animated sequel are facing issues.

He revealed, “We just can’t do anything without DC saying we can do it. They just haven’t given us a green light, but we’re ready […] but it’s not our property, until they say we can do it.”

Michael Rosenbaum, who played Lex Luthor in ‘Smallville,’ also told Screen Rant earlier this year, “All I could share is that it’s a great idea. We have Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar], the creators of ‘Smallville,’ backing us up. When it’s the right time, we’d like to go and do this: pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time.”

‘Smallville’ had 10 seasons—five on The WB and five on The CW. The show featured Welling as Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, and Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor. The ‘Smallville’ sequel is currently in the works.
