James Van Der Beek Tells Of How He Has Explained His Little Kids About Their Mother’s Pregnancy Loss

James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as ‘Dawson Leery’ on ‘Dawson’s Creek‘ took to Instagram the other day in order to post a touching moment he shared with his little kids. In the video, he is seen telling his children –  Gwendolyn, 2, Emilia, 4, Annabel Leah, 6, Joshua, 8, and Olivia, 9 – that they lost a baby boy.

In 2019, the actor’s wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek suffered a miscarriage at 17 weeks pregnant. A year after that really harsh experience, the ‘Varsity Blues‘ actor decided to share the video to touch on the importance of being honest to children, in even the toughest times.

Alongside the video, he had recorded while his wife still in the hospital, the actor wrote that although every kid is so different, they deserve explanations about the happenings around them.

“I feel like all you can do when explaining the unimaginable is be present with them. And keep being present with them wherever they’re at, for as long as they need. You can’t process for them, you can’t mitigate their pain, and you can’t dictate their timeline. They all broke down at different times – and for different reasons. Some still talk about it. Some don’t like to.”

The Rules of Attraction‘ added that he is strongly encouraging his fans and followers to be open and honest towards their kids. According to him, it is quite important to let the loved ones being a part of the journey, which can be bitter from time to time.

“We’re not made to go through this alone.”

In another post, the actor also told of competing on ‘Dancing With the Stars‘ almost 48 hours after they had lost their unborn child. He posted a photo of himself from the show, and wrote alongside that he would not dance that night, however, he did it after his wife, Kimberly encouraged him to do so. He continued:

“I point out all of this only to say that at perhaps any other stage in life, my demeanor in this moment would not have been so serene. I would’ve felt injustice, frustration, anger, pain… but what came over me as I comforted my partner and told Ally no way was I taking her spot… was grace.”
