Jared Harris explained why he decided to take part in Sony’s highly-criticized ‘Morbius’ in a new interview with the U.K.’s i newspaper. “I have got a mortgage to pay, you know,” he shared with the outlet. “Sometimes you say yes to things because you need to make money.”
‘Morbius’ followed Jared Leto’s Michael Morbius as he worked on a cure for his blood disease and accidentally turned himself into a vampire. Later, the character faced off his brother, Milo (Matt Smith), who also developed similar powers.
“I have observed that those types of films do well if you have a sense of humor,” Harris commented when asked about his experience making the film. “You can’t treat it as though it’s Shakespeare. So yeah, that movie could have done with a more mischievous sense of humor.”
The Daniel Espinosa-directed adaptation flopped at the box office when it finally arrived in 2022, a couple of years late due to the pandemic. It received a 15% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though 71% of the audience gave it positive reviews.
Espinosa took on the blame for the ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff’s failure back in July. “To make a movie through committee, I think, is very hard, and I felt in the end that maybe a different director would have been a better fit,” he told Deadline.
‘Morbius’ lost its franchise potential along with ‘Madame Web,’ which also didn’t commercially and critically do well last year. Plans for the future of Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ universe are unclear right now.
