Jeff Goldblum commented on Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback as the new MCU villain in a recent chat on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast.
“Excellent news,” he shared. “I think I vaguely heard the… yes, yes, I’d heard whispers on my peripheral. Yes, channels. Victor von Doom… I like that name. If my name had been Victor von Doom, I’d be a long further along than I am now. That’s a great name. Or Von to anything. Or Van.”
Downey took on the role of Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom for the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ Though nobody including his ‘Avengers’ castmates knew about it, he revealed that talks about his return as the character started around a year ago.
The former Iron Man actor stayed in touch with Kevin Feige after his departure from the MCU. The Marvel executive shared his plans for Doom during a meeting with Downey and his wife, Susan.
The actor recently told The Hollywood Reporter, “Then, we both realized over time that it was another thing that just disproves any doubt anyone could ever have about that guy, a very sophisticated creative thinker, about how can we not go backwards, how can we not disappoint expectations, how we can continue to beat expectations?”
“And he brought up Victor Von Doom. I looked up this character and I was like, ‘Wow.’ Later, Kevin goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right. Let’s get that right,’” he added.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will hit the screens on May 1, 2026, and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ will follow on May 7, 2027.
