Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luther Advice To Nicholas Hoult Involves A Confession

Eisenberg’s guidance was simple yet striking: ‘Don’t watch me!’

During an interview at the Variety Studio, Jesse Eisenberg, known for his portrayal of Lex Luthor in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ offered a piece of advice to Nicholas Hoult, who is set to assume the same role in the upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy.’

Arguing each actor should bring their own interpretation to a role, Eisenberg told Variety’s Matt Donnelly the following:

“Don’t watch me! Whenever you play a role, you feel connected to it. There’s no way around it. Any time you do anything, even if it’s a movie that’s a Hollywood kind of thing, you connect.”

He gave this candid advice at the Sundance Film Festival, where he was present with his two latest projects, ‘Sasquatch Sunset’ and ‘A Real Pain,’ the latter of which he also directed.

Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor Was Highly Criticized

Eisenberg’s performance as Lex Luthor in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ received mixed reviews and resulted in him receiving the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actor. Despite this, Eisenberg had a positive outlook on his interpretation of the character, claiming he was aiming to portray Luthor as real and relatable.

Looking forward, the ‘Superman: Legacy‘ film is slated for a July 11, 2025 release. Hoult’s casting as Lex Luthor follows his role as Hank McCoy in ‘X-Men: First Class.’ The film also stars David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Meanwhile, Eisenberg continues his career with other projects. At Sundance, he promoted ‘A Real Pain,‘ a film about the aftermath of a grandmother’s death and a subsequent journey to Poland, joining a Holocaust tour. This movie, Eisenberg clarified, is not a political statement but an attempt to humanize historical experiences.

Hoult, on his part, has a busy schedule with upcoming projects like ‘The Garfield Movie,’ ‘Nosferatu,’ ‘The Order,’ ‘Juror #2,’ and ‘The One.’ Eisenberg is also not slowing down, with ‘Now You See Me 3‘ in his pipeline.
