After playing Dr. Robotnik in 2022’s ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2,’ Jim Carrey took a break from acting, waiting for the right project to lure him back. This year, he returned for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3,’ and now hints that we might see more of him in future roles.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Carrey discussed the possibility of revisiting his famous roles as The Grinch from ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ and Stanley Ipkiss from ‘The Mask.’
Regarding a new ‘The Mask’ movie, he said, “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess… It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money… But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just – things tend to change.”
About a potential ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2,’ the actor explained, “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”
The Dr. Seuss Estate has strict guidelines for studios looking to adapt Dr. Seuss’s works, including the profit share as well as the director and casting choices. So, it’s unclear if a sequel could work for ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ on business terms.
Chances of another ‘The Mask’ movie are also up in the air, as a sequel in 2005 featuring Jamie Kennedy instead of Jim Carrey failed at the box office and received negative reviews.
Right now, Carrey is set to appear on the big screen for the first time since his retirement announcement on December 20. He recently cited his like for playing genius Dr. Robotnik and ‘the money’ as the reason for his return.
