Jodie Comer reacts to the criticism she received for her accent in ‘The Bikeriders.’
Not everyone is happy with ‘The Bikeriders,’ especially when it comes to the accents. Some criticized Comer’s take on Kathy Bauer’s voice, saying it felt like Tom Hardy was passing on his ‘silly accent torch’ to Comer. In response to this, Comer explained that Kathy’s accent was the hardest she had ever done:
“I would say that Kathy’s accent is probably the hardest one that I’ve done. I was given 30 minutes of audio with the real Kathy being interviewed by Danny Lyon, and I was so struck by how singular and unique her dialect and cadence were. So I started working with a dialect coach, Victoria [Hanlin], and she … told me, ‘All the vowel sounds are a contradiction. This is something that is entirely her own.’ And I said, ‘I want to get as close to the audio as I possibly can.'”
Some fans praised Comer’s effort, though. One person on X reminded people that Comer’s accent is based on the real Kathy and sounds almost the same.
Comer Isn’t the Only One Criticized By Fans
Tom Hardy plays the aging gang leader Johnny in the film, and he is called the ‘king’ of absurd accents. One viewer noted that Hardy seems to use a unique accent in each film, even if the accent doesn’t exist anywhere in the world.
‘The Bikeriders’ tells the story from Kathy’s perspective, as she recounts her experiences with the Chicago gang to Danny Lyon (Mike Faist). The film’s cast and positive reviews didn’t stop the discussions about the accents, but Comer stands by her performance.
‘The Bikeriders’ was released in UK cinemas on June 21. It is a Midwestern biker gang story based on Danny Lyon’s 1967 photobook. Comer plays Kathy Bauer, the partner of gang member Benny (Austin Butler). The movie also stars Tom Hardy and Norman Reedus. You can watch the trailer below.
