Winterhalt is married to actress Sarah Wayne-Callies, and they have two children, Keala and Oakes, via TUKO.co.ke. They met at Dartmouth College in the mid-1990s and got married on July 21, 2002.
The family moved to Canada, and five years later, they had their daughter Keala, born in August 2007. Keala is following in her mother’s footsteps and began her acting career in 2014, starring in the film ‘Into the Storm.’

She also appeared in films like ‘The Celestine Prophecy’ and ‘Whisper.’ Besides acting, Sarah wrote the screenplay for ‘Elena’s Serenade.’ Her latest project is starring in the TV series ‘The Company You Keep.’ She also directed three episodes of ‘Fire Country.’
