‘Avengers: Endgame’ star Josh Brolin has been rumored to play the DCU’s ‘Clayface,’ but a new report suggests that DC Studios is targeting a ‘much younger’ actor for the role.
Brolin was previously considered for the role of Hal Jordan in Lanterns, but he turned it down. He still remains high on James Gunn’s wishlist of actors to bring into the DCU.
As for now, there’s speculation about Mike Flanagan potentially taking on the project with Brolin as a contender for Clayface. However, according to @ApocHorseman of Nexus Point News, these rumors about Brolin are unfounded.
“Not true,” the scooper said in response to the Brolin speculation. “Like I said it’s gonna be someone much younger. They haven’t even started casting and won’t do so until they have a director. Someone claims DC still wants Brolin for a role and then everyone assumes he’s gonna be cast in the next project to start casting.”
Clayface first debuted in the 1940s, just months after ‘The Joker.’ Basil Karlo was portrayed as a deranged B-list actor who dressed as the sinister Clayface, a character he’d once played. After being recast, Karlo sought revenge, targeting the cast and crew of the film made without him. Eventually, Batman and Robin apprehended him.
Karlo gained shape-shifting abilities over time, but fans of ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ are more familiar with Matt Hagen’s version: the Clayface who transformed into a monster after encountering a radioactive pool of protoplasm.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming ‘Clayface’ film and the unexpected journey to its development:
“I didn’t plan on making a ‘Clayface’ movie,” Gunn admitted. “Mike came in. He pitched this wonderful idea. I was like, ‘Damn, I can’t believe you got me to want to make a ‘Clayface’ movie.’ But he’s got to write the script and who knows how that’s going to work.”
“He goes and he writes the script. First draft is great. Second draft is even better. And then I’m like, ‘Let’s do it,'” the filmmaker continued. “So we found a place for it because if there’s quality stuff, we can find a way to work it in.”
‘Clayface’ movie is set to arrive in theaters on September 11, 2026.
