Kaitlyn Dever Needs Extra Security Against Fan Hate On ‘The Last Of Us’ Set

Dever joined the show’s Season 2 as Joel and Ellie’s antagonist, Abby Anderson.

Fan hate toward Abby led to Kaitlyn Dever needing extra security on ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 set. Co-star Isabela Merced explained concerns about Dever’s safety in a recent chat on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast.

“There are so many strange people in this world because there are people that actually genuinely hate Abby, who is not a real person,” she said. “Kaitlyn had to be extra secured by security when it came to the filming of this.”

Abby Anderson has not been a well-liked character in the original video games, and Dever’s casting for the role in Season 2 only fueled the backlash against the character. Gamers criticized Dever for not having the muscular build they expected for the role.

“What confuses me is the showrunner and creator of the video game, they work together to make this, so if you like what the guy made and he’s making more of it, why are you mad?” Merced questioned. “I’m too opinionated to be on Twitter. I see this stuff on Twitter, and it makes me want to go Cardi B on them.”

“Kaitlyn is such a cool person who does not get phased by things. She really had her head in the right place, and she is also going through a lot personally right now. It’s devastating to see, but also give her the damn Emmy, honestly. I’m so excited for people to see how incredibly well Bella [Ramsey] and Kaitlyn did on this.”

Production for ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 will wrap up on August 21, according to the Directors Guild of Canada. The new episodes will air in 2025 on HBO.
