Kevin Smith’s Dogma Sequel Will ‘Ruin It’ – But He’s Doing It Anyway

‘Dogma’ is coming back.

Kevin Smith plans ‘Dogma’ sequel despite it might ruin it.

“Some people will be like, ‘Don’t f*cking touch it. You’ll ruin it.’ And I’m here to tell you: I will,” the actor told the audience at Vulture Festival. “I’m f*cking tickled. I found a way in.”

Smith’s ‘Dogma’ sequel will be more of a companion film than a direct sequel. The gang won’t be saving God again, but Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will return. Smith says they owe him, as he helped them get ‘Good Will Hunting’ made but never got a thank you at the awards.

The actor shared, “I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 f*cking years, which is why they keep showing up in all the movies. Expect a cameo from them — more than a f*cking cameo. The only way we get a ‘Dogma’ sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.”

The 1999 film ‘Dogma’ has been a point of dispute between companies like Disney, Miramax, and the Weinsteins. Smith made three offers to buy the rights back from Harvey Weinstein — first for $250,000, then $500,000, and finally $1 million. However, Weinstein rejected the offers, saying they were too low.

Smith wanted to buy the rights because the film was very personal to him. But he couldn’t support any deal that gave Weinstein profit participation. Eventually, Weinstein’s company needed money for his legal fees, so it sold off several films, including ‘Dogma.’ The company didn’t realize what it had bought until they saw that Ben Affleck was in the film.

The panel celebrated the 25th anniversary of ‘Dogma,’ where Affleck and Matt Damon play angels trying to find a loophole to return to heaven. The film also stars Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Alanis Morissette, and Jason Mewes, and Kevin Smith as Jay and Silent Bob.

‘Dogma’ is the fourth film in Smith’s View Askewniverse, which includes ‘Clerks,’ ‘Mallrats,’ ‘Chasing Amy,’ ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,’ ‘Clerks II,’ ‘Jay and Silent Bob Reboot,’ and ‘Clerks III.’
