Lee Jung-jae Breaks Silence On ‘The Acolyte’ Cancelation

The actor says he was ‘looking forward to watching a Season 2.’

Disney+ pulled the plug on ‘The Acolyte’ a little over a month after the Season 1 finale aired. Manny Jacinto (The Stranger) reacted to the news by posting the show’s last shot along with a heart emoji on Instagram.

Lee Jung-jae (Jedi Master Sol) commented on the ‘Star Wars’ spinoff’s early ending during a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly. “As you know, my character had died already in the first season. So, I wouldn’t have appeared in the second season if there was one anyway,” he said.

“But personally speaking, I really loved Leslye’s writing. I thought that she was a great writer and director who was very talented in the storytelling, as well as creating characters and creating meaningful structures within the story. So, I was actually personally really looking forward to watching a Season 2 with her at the helm.”

‘The Acolyte’ had a strong start with its first two episodes on June 4, despite facing review-bombing from fans. It became this year’s top series premiere on Disney+, scoring 4.8 million views on the first day. The global views reached 11.1 million on its fifth day.

The show also entered Nielsen’s Top 10 chart at No. 7 and climbed to No. 6 in the second week. But viewership dropped by the end of Season 1, making it fall out of the Top 10 after Week 3 until the finale.

Writer Leslye Headland was prepared for a possible cancellation from the beginning. “I think you should put everything you can into the first season and give the audience a nice resolution that feels satisfying, but enough nods to mysteries that you would want to see a second season,” she noted in her previous interviews.

Other ‘Star Wars’ projects are still in the pipeline, though. The ‘Skeleton Crew’ TV series starring Jude Law is set for release in December 2024. ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 and ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ movie are currently in the works.
