Since the release of ‘The Force Awakens,’ there have been whispers about a possible ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic’ (KOTOR) adaptation at Lucasfilm. While rumors circulated for years, it wasn’t until 2019 that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that a project based on the beloved video game was being considered. In an interview, Kennedy described it as “something to look at,” though she didn’t specify whether it would be a movie or a Disney+ TV series.
Since then, updates on the project have been sparse. However, it’s now believed that the studio is finally moving forward with a KOTOR-based series.
According to Daniel Richtman, “Lucasfilm is developing a show set during the Knights of the Old Republic era.”
While events from KOTOR and the Expanded Universe/Legends are no longer part of the current ‘Star Wars’ canon, Lucasfilm has occasionally drawn inspiration from these stories. For example, Leslye Headland’s ‘The Acolyte’ incorporated elements influenced by KOTOR, though the series was ultimately canceled after its first season.
Originally released as a LucasArts video game in 2003, ‘Knights of the Old Republic’ is set nearly 4,000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire. It has since expanded into a sprawling franchise, including spin-off novels and comic books. The game’s rich narrative and complex characters have made it a fan favorite, and its potential adaptation into a series has sparked significant excitement.
As of now, no official announcements have been made regarding the cast, plot, or release date of the rumored series.
