Lucasfilm Thinks ‘Dark Phoenix’s Simon Kinberg Is The ‘Safe Choice’ To Direct New Star Wars Trilogy

Simon Kinberg has been hired by Lucasfilm to write and produce a new “Star Wars” trilogy.

Kinberg, best known for his work as a writer, producer, director, or all of the above on much of the ‘X-Men’ franchise, was chosen by Lucasfilm to take on a stewardship role in ‘Star Wars. This decision has surprised many in the industry.

According to multiple industry sources with experience in franchise filmmaking, Kinberg is seen as a sensible and safe choice on one level. Starting with 2005’s ‘XXX: State of the Union and ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith, his films as a screenwriter have grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. Beyond the ‘X-Men’ films, he’s also produced ‘Cinderella’, ‘The Martian’ and Kenneth Branagh’s three Hercule Poirot films, all of which have enjoyed ample success. He’s known for his ability to communicate with film executives about franchise filmmaking in a way that eases their concerns over creative decisions impacting the costly bottom line of these projects. On the other hand, “Dark Phoenix,” his directorial debut in 2019, was the lowest-grossing and the worst-reviewed film in the ‘X-Men’ franchise up to that point.

His hiring is reportedly due, in part, to “Kinberg’s ongoing creative relationship with Lucasfilm creative executive Carrie Beck and chief creative officer Dave Filoni.”

It’s said that “Kinberg’s efforts aim to create a new saga, but, as with virtually all script development, specific plot details and characters are far from taking their final shape, let alone reaching theaters.”

Lucasfilm’s choice of Kinberg has sparked surprise in the industry and concern among fans due to his past work’s mixed reception.
