Netflix announced that the final film of Chadwick Boseman, who passed away in August following a four year battle with colon cancer, ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ would premiere on December 18.
The news released through the official Instagram account for Netflix Film; alongside the official poster of the film, starring Viola Davis, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts, the following message was shared:
“Introducing Ma Rainey and her band. MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM on Netflix December 18.”
Davis, who portrays one of the earliest African-American blues singers, Gertrude “Ma” Rainey in the said movie, also announce the release date with an Instagram post that reads:
“Can’t wait for y’all to meet Ma Rainey on December 18! ❤️ #MaRainey #Netflix”
Following the post, Hollywood stars flooded the comments section with the following messages:
“I can’t either” wrote, Octavia Spencer.
“dead. can’t wait for this! 🙏🏽” added, Halle Berry.
“Holy holy holy!!!! 🔥” commented, Jessica Chastain.
The drama film, featuring Boseman’s final role prior to his death, was directed by George C. Wolfe, written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and produced by Todd Black. It sets in 1927 Chicago and centers on the recording season of ‘Mother of the Blues.’
