The Academy has released its full list of films eligible for a “Best Picture” nomination at the Oscars, and ‘Madame Web’ is the only Marvel or DC film excluded for 2024.
According to The Wrap, ‘Madame Web’ was among 116 of the 323 eligible films that failed to qualify for a Best Picture nomination.
In order to be eligible for consideration, it’s said that “Feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.”
Given Sony Pictures’ history of Marvel adaptations, fans didn’t have high expectations for ‘Madame Web.’ The film debuted with a 11% score on Rotten Tomatoes and earned only $100.4 million at the worldwide box office. ‘Madame Web’ is now remembered as one of the weakest superhero films in recent memory.
‘Madame Web’ tells the standalone origin story of Cassandra Webb. The cast includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.
The film is now available for streaming on Netflix and for purchase on Digital, 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
