Margot Robbie Admits Anticipating ‘Barbie’ To Be A Terrible Movie

Before filming ‘Barbie’, Margot Robbie felt scared about playing Barbie and making the movie.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, Robbie recently opened up about her emotional struggle in the lead-up to ‘Barbie’s filming, admitting she feared the project would be a disaster.

Robbie, the star and executive producer of the blockbuster hit ‘Barbie,’ shared her initial thoughts about the film’s success. She described her state of mind as one of panic and doubt, especially as the shooting date approached:

“A few weeks out, I have this meltdown where I’m like, ‘What am I doing? I don’t know how to act. Everyone’s going to suddenly realize that I can’t do any of this, and it’s going to be terrible.’ And then it is just sheer panic. ‘I don’t know how to apply any of this research I’ve done, and I’ve done all the things, and I still don’t know who she is.'”

Despite years of effort to launch the movie, Robbie found herself questioning her acting talent and the film’s potential just weeks before filming began.

Robbie’s Fears Turned Out to Be Wrong

Contrary to Robbie’s concerns, ‘Barbie‘ was a cinematic triumph. Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film not only received critical acclaim but also broke box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023 and Warner Bros.’ biggest earner of all time with $1.44 billion in global ticket sales.

Robbie’s portrayal of Barbie earned her nominations for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Still, ‘Barbie’ Disappointed With Oscar Nominations

‘Barbie’ secured eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, but both Robbie and Gerwig were absent from the Best Actress and Best Director categories. This resulted in widespread disappointment, with Michelle Yeoh, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Stephen King, Hillary Clinton, and Whoopi Goldberg expressing their surprise at the oversight.

Robbie, while brushing aside discussions of her own Oscars snub, saw the omission of Gerwig for Best Director as unjust. As for now, she is set to continue her on-screen success with upcoming roles, including an ‘Ocean’s 11’ prequel.
