Mark Harmon Returns For ‘NCIS: Origins’

The show will feature a new story set in 1991.

Mark Harmon is excited about ‘NCIS: Origins.’

‘NCIS: Origins’ is a prequel that will take us back to the early days of Jethro Gibbs. Harmon played Gibbs on ‘NCIS’ for 18 years before leaving in 2021, and he returned to be a part of this new series. He believes the prequel will be different from what people expect. He told Variety, “Is there a story to tell? Definitely. Is it going to be different from what people know? Definitely. I couldn’t be more thrilled with Gina and David, who they represent, and their history with his show.”

The new show takes place in 1991, right after the murder of Gibbs’ wife and child. Austin Stowell will star as young Gibbs. Harmon’s son Sean Harmon played this role in several ‘NCIS’ episodes. But Sean chose to work behind the scenes as an executive producer this time. Harmon explained that his son enjoys producing and wanted to focus on that. “He’s an actor, writer, producer a surfer, he does a lot of things. You have to decide what you want to do in life, or what you think’s important. I think he made a choice and had to decide some ways,” he said.

Harmon won’t be the star of ‘NCIS: Origins,’ but he is very involved. He’s done voiceover work for the show and will also make a cameo appearance in the first episode. The details of his appearance are still being kept secret, though. Harmon said that he feels good about being part of the team and is always available on set to help out when needed.

The prequel is being led by ‘NCIS’ veterans David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, and Harmon is confident in their ability to tell a fresh story. He has a lot of respect for their work and is proud of how hard they’ve worked on this new project.

Harmon shared that making the show hasn’t been easy, as there have been challenges and changes along the way. He feels that the team fought for everything they’ve achieved, and he’s excited to see how viewers respond when it airs.

‘NCIS: Origins’ will premiere on CBS on Monday, October 14, at 9 p.m. ET.
