Martin Freeman thinks ‘Miller’s Girl’ does not endorse relationships between adults and minors.
‘Miller’s Girl’ stars Freeman as a writing teacher and Jenna Ortega as an 18-year-old student who develops a crush on him. Freeman is 31 years older than Ortega, so this caused a backlash. The actor recently told The Times that the movie shows these characters together, but that doesn’t mean it supports this:
“[It’s] grown-up and nuanced. It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?”
Freeman also pointed out that Liam Neeson played in ‘Schindler’s List,’ and nobody criticizes him for doing so:
“Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?”
‘Miller’s Girl’ is now available on Netflix in North America.
The Crew Tried To Ensure Both Actors Were Comfortable
‘Miller’s Girl’s production team took extra care to make sure the actors felt comfortable during filming — especially during steamy scenes. Kristina Arjona was the film’s intimacy coordinator, and she was responsible for ensuring that both Freeman and Ortega were okay with the scenes they were filming. She often checked in with them to see if they were comfortable:
“There were many, many people throughout this process, engaging with (Jenna) to make sure that it was consistent with what she was comfortable with, and she was very determined and very sure of what she wanted to do. I’m hyper-aware of both of my talents and making sure that we’re consistently checking in and that at no point are any of their boundaries being surpassed.”
Arjona also talked about how Ortega was very clear and confident about her role and what she was okay with doing on screen. She claims they even tested some scenes in front of an audience to make sure they weren’t too much for viewers.
