Marvel Exec Teases The Next Animated Series To Follow X-Men ’97

Marvel’s Head of TV, Streaming, and Animation revealed that the studio is close to finishing its next animated project.

Marvel Animation is already working on ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 after the finale earlier this week and has another series lined up for release. Executive Producer Brad Winderbaum shared with ComicBook:

“‘What If…?’ Season Three is — that might be the one that comes out next, in terms of animation. That is the culmination of a trilogy. We’re actually close to completing that one, and it really feels like you’ve gone through this amazing emotional experience with Uatu, in a way that’s… What’s great about The Watcher is that he presents himself as uncaring, and cold, and just an observer, but he cares more than everybody [and] anybody. That is on full display in that third season.”

Early looks at Season 3 teased the return of Sam Wilson / Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), Bill Foster / Goliath (Laurence Fishburne), Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), and Alexi Shostakov / Red Guardian (David Harbour) last year. America Ferrera also joined the cast as Agent Morales.

What Happened In ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 1?

‘X-Men ’97’ Season 1 ending introduced a romantic plot between Wolverine and Morph. The non-binary hero cared and confessed his love for Logan after Magneto ripped the adamantium off his skeleton.

Showrunner Beau DeMayo confirmed on X:

“Yes, Morph was confessing romantic feelings for Logan.”

Signs of a romantic storyline between the two mutants were there throughout the first season. Some scenes showed Morph rolling in the grass with Wolverine as Sabretooth and teasing him in a nightclub as Jean.

Season 1 also delved into a love triangle between Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit. Rogue’s closeness to Magneto caused problems with Gambit in the show.

You can watch ‘X-Men ’97’ and the previous seasons of ‘What If…?’ on Disney+.
