Matt Smith Says It Was ‘Foolish’ To Regret ‘Doctor Who’ And He’s Open To A Comeback

Following David Tennant, Smith is up for another appearance in the BBC show’s future.

In a recent BBC interview, Matt Smith revisited his time on ‘Doctor Who,’ touching upon his initial concerns about being typecast due to his role as The Doctor. Previously worried about the long-term effects on his career, Smith now thinks being part of the show was pretty awesome:

“I was young and sort of foolish. I’m still foolish; I’m just older. I thought, ‘Well, would I just always be Doctor Who?’ And then I realized, actually, always being Doctor Who is amazing. It’s a great thing. It’s still one of the great pleasures of my life. I’m so, so proud of that show.”

Smith took on the mantle of the Eleventh Doctor following David Tennant’s exit. The 60th Anniversary special saw Tennant’s return, alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, fueling speculation about other past Doctors making appearances.

When asked if he would consider returning to ‘Doctor Who’ one last time like the ‘Broadchurch’ actor did, Smith said:

“Never say never. Never say never!”

The Actor Wants To Work With RTD

Being the main guy from 2010 to 2013, Matt Smith left his place to Peter Capaldi after three seasons. Despite leaving the show, Smith briefly appeared in a flashback during a 2014 episode, a scene that was filmed during his final season.

Around the 60th Anniversary of the show, there was talk among fans about the ‘House Of The Dragon’ actor possibly making another cameo, although he mentioned not being asked to come back. Still, he seemed pretty open to the idea during a chat with CNET:

“I mean, look, I’m pleased Russell [T Davies is] back. I think he oversaw one of the great 10 years of Doctor Who. He’s a great guy; he’s a brilliant writer. I think he manages to get in the cultural zeitgeist, which is what that show needs to do. It’s an exciting move for the show, so I’m sure one of his scripts would be just brilliant. I haven’t heard, and no one’s picked up the phone yet.”

‘Doctor Who’ is now in a new phase with Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor. Gatwa’s first full season is coming in May.
