The actor and film narrator Morgan Freeman, who received numerous movie awards, including Golden Globe Award, Academy Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award, posted a photo of himself when he had been at a stadium with Don Newcombe, through Instagram.
By captioning the photo, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ co-star spoke of the Negro National League, which includes professional baseball black teams.
He wrote:
“I can’t end the night without tipping my cap to the Negro National League, the first successful, organized professional Black Baseball League that provided a playing field for African-American and Hispanic baseball players to showcase their world-class baseball abilities.”
Then, the 83-year-old legendary actor mentioned how the Negro Leagues contributed to social change:
“The Negro Leagues would operate for 40 years becoming a catalyst for economic growth in African-American communities across the country and helping spark social change in America.”
Freeman, who has been fighting against racist actions throughout his life, also commemorated the professional baseball pitcher, Don Newcombe:
“And I’ll always remember Don Newcombe a true legend and dear friend. #centennialcelebration”
