Directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, ‘Mortal Kombat 2‘ is not only a follow-up to the 2021 hit but also the fourth installment in the film series. Inspired by the video game created by John Tobias and Ed Boon, the sequel promises to blend martial arts and fantasy on the screen.
Filming for the project kicked off on June 22, 2023, at Village Roadshow Studios in Gold Coast, Queensland. However, production faced a temporary halt in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, resuming in November after the strike’s conclusion. As per Huang, this week marks the wrapping of principal photography.
The film brings together returning and new faces. Alongside Huang, the cast features familiar names like Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, and Joe Taslim, with Hiroyuki Sanada returning as well.
Some of the new names include Karl Urban, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, Desmond Chiam, and Damon Herriman.
Despite the wrapped filming, Warner Bros. Pictures has not yet announced a specific release date for ‘Mortal Kombat 2.’ The budget for the sequel also remains undisclosed. Given the original film’s success, made with a budget of approximately $55 million and becoming a major hit on the Max streaming service, expectations are high for the sequel.
As for the storyline, while official details are scarce, the ending of the first film provides some clues. The climax saw Cole Young and Hanzo Hasashi defeating Sub-Zero, with Raiden sending his champions to recruit new fighters. The final scenes hinted at an important role for Johnny Cage in the upcoming narrative.
