‘Arcane’ Season 2 wrapped up Vi and Jinx’s story on November 23. Just ahead of the finale, though, the show faced controversy as some fans claimed Netflix used AI on one of its official posters.
Netflix didn’t issue a statement on whether AI was used for the image featuring Vi and Jinx. But Riot Games Brand Lead Alex Shahmir addressed the matter on social media, revealing that AI appeared to have been used to expand parts of the image beyond its original design.
Shahmir explained, “Appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We have a strict stance of no AI for anything relating to arcane cause it’s disrespectful to the incredible artists who worked on the show. This image was a mistake and has since been removed. TY again for calling it out.”
‘Arcane’ followed Jinx and Vi’s conflicting ideals on the social and economic divide between Piltover and Zaun, as the former took out her anger on Piltover’s rulers. The animation, produced by Christian Linke, Marc Merrill, Brandon Beck, Jane Chung, and Thomas Vu, had a production budget of $250 million.
About the high price tag, Riot Games Co-Founder Marc Merrill told Variety, “We’re more than comfortable with the spend it took to deliver a show that was worthy of our players’ time.”
He continued, “I understand why that change could feel to some folks like we’re moving away from our aspirations in entertainment, but that’s absolutely not the case. We have projects in development and are just as excited about the possibilities in TV and film as we’ve ever been.”
Riot Games and Studio Fortiche confirmed that Season 2 would mark the end for ‘Arcane’ but teased upcoming projects to expand the ‘League of Legends’ universe on screen.
