Last week Netflix live-streamed the highly anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. However, both widespread streaming issues and allegations of cheating have led to the streaming giant facing a lawsuit.
A Florida resident has filed a lawsuit in Florida state court on behalf of customers who experienced issues during the broadcast. The complaint claims that Netflix was “very poorly prepared” to handle the massive global audience for the live event. It alleges that the technical problems constituted a breach of contract and deceptive trade practices under Florida law.
“Netflix customers experienced massive streaming issues and should have known better because it’s happened before,” reads part of the complaint.
The complaint continued, “Instead of providing the programming its viewers pay for every month, Netflix was completely unprepared and unable to fix the issues.” The complaint also noted that Netflix “continued billing for services not delivered”
The fight, which took place on Friday, November 17, was expected to be a major live event for Netflix. According to the platform, the event drew an estimated average minute audience of 108 million viewers, making it the most-streamed global sporting event in history. However, during the event, users began reporting issues with the stream.
Issues persisted with some users going online with calls to “cancel Netflix” over the issue.
In the competition, Paul won the fight by unanimous decision, but after the results were announced, social media users expressed skepticism, with many claiming the outcome was predetermined.
