Netflix recently added another project to the collection of documentaries and shows focusing on the unresolved murder of JonBenét Ramsey, who was found dead at the age of 6 in Boulder, Colorado, home.
Talking about the docuseries titled ‘Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey’ in a new chat with Variety, director Joe Berlinger said, ‘‘I want to do something when I have something to say, and I feel like I have a number of things to say here. Most importantly, I think that this crime can actually be solved.’’
JonBenét’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, found a ransom note in their kitchen on the morning of December 26, 1996, thinking their daughter was kidnapped. Later that day, they found her dead body in the basement of their home. Evidence showed she was sexually assaulted.
The Boulder police quickly turned their suspicions to the Ramsey family, leading to intense media attention that often portrayed the parents as the main suspects.
Berlinger created ‘Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey’ to explore how the mistakes in the early investigation and media influence that was fueled by the Boulder police caused a biased narrative, affecting the case. John Ramsey, now 80, along with lawyers and journalists who took part in the case, appeared in the series to discuss the matter.
The three-episode documentary also featured insights from Lou Smit, a retired detective who joined the investigation to help the Boulder DA’s office. Smit later left the case due to the local police’s dismissal of a possible intruder that could’ve been responsible for the murder.
‘Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey’ hit Netflix on November 25.
