‘The Matrix 5’ will have Drew Goddard stepping in as the director, according to a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter. The writer behind ‘World War Z’ and ‘The Martian’ approached Warner Bros. with a new idea for the fifth installment.
A comment from WB executive Jesse Ehrman about the project read:
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the ‘Matrix’ world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”
The new film will be the first in the series not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski. However, Lana will still have a role in the project as an executive producer.
Ehrman didn’t reveal any story details but continued:
“The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
Will The Original Actors Come Back?
The original ‘Matrix’ trilogy wrapped up in 2003 with ‘The Matrix Revolutions.’ The franchise made a comeback nearly two decades later with ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ in 2021.
Lana Wachowski directed the latest film without her sister. But her story hinted at a reluctance to continue the series. Keanu Reeves confirmed the director’s wish to stop in a chat with Empire Magazine a few years ago:
“I don’t believe so. If I had to cast a ballot—No, not a ballot, a vote. I would say that Lana would not do another ‘Matrix.’”
‘Resurrections’ did not perform well at the box office. It earned only $37 million domestically.
It’s unclear whether the new ‘Matrix’ film will directly follow the fourth installment’s plot, but Reeves said he would be ‘honored and grateful’ to return if Lana decided to go on.
