‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ had a production budget of around $200 million, not counting the money spent on marketing, and it collected $476 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run. Although analysts estimated that the film needed to earn more than $500 million to break even, Forbes reported otherwise.
“The super hero flick debuted in February last year to a lukewarm reception and only grossed $476.07 million, according to industry analyst Box Office Mojo,” the outlet recently wrote. “Studios typically receive around 50% of the takings meaning that Disney got around $238.05 million, which was $92.05 million less than its net spending on making the movie, as we recently revealed.”
After all expenses, the film netted a profit of $88,236. Though decent, this amount was not significant enough to prompt Marvel executives to begin work on a fourth film.
The release of ‘Ant-Man 3’ coincided with a bad period for the MCU. Following the threequel, ‘The Marvels’ hit the theaters and became the lowest-grossing Marvel Studios film ever. The studio then announced a strategy shift to focus on ‘quality over quantity,’ reducing the number of movies and Disney+ shows released annually.
This year, however, the studio went back on track as ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ broke records as the biggest R-rated release ever, and ‘Agatha All Along’ gained popularity among fans. How effective the studio’s new strategy will be in the long run remains to be seen.
