Nicholas Hoult reflected on his experience working with Nicolas Cage in ‘Renfield’ while, recently revisiting some of his lines from various projects for Variety.
After watching a scene from the movie, the actor said, “Nicolas Cage, who plays Dracula in the movie, has said that he’s gonna care for me or do something nice. And my character has been duped once again.”
“He’s such a fun actor to be in scenes with because the inspiration he brings, how he creates his characters, where he gets ideas from—He’s a real cinephile and loves movies, and he’s also bold in his performances,” he continued. “I love watching him. So, to get a front row seat, to get to be in scenes with him, and to play opposite that is magic.”
In the film, Hoult played Dracula’s tortured servant Renfield, who decided to break free from his boss’s control after centuries of loyal servitude. The cast also featured Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Brandon Scott Jones, and Adrian Martinez.
Based on Robert Kirkman’s story inspired by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel ‘Dracula’ and the 1931 film adaptation, Ryan Ridley wrote the script. Kirkman served as producer alongside Samantha Nisenboim, Bryan and Sean Furst, and David Alpert.
Despite its underwhelming box office performance, earning $26.9 million worldwide against a $65 million budget, ‘Renfield’ made an impression during the awards season. It received five nominations at the 51st Saturn Awards, with Nicolas Cage winning Best Supporting Actor.
