Nicole Kidman Shares Her One Condition To Work With Martin Scorsese

Kidman hasn’t collaborated with Scorsese before.

Nicole Kidman might think about working with Martin Scorsese under one condition.

The actress told Vanity Fair that she hasn’t worked with Scorsese yet, but she would like to. She told the outlet, “I’ve always said I want to work with Scorsese, if he does a film with women.”

Most of his movies focus on male characters. So, she’s willing to collaborate if the film meets this condition. Kidman has four Oscar nominations and one win. She has won 110 awards and been nominated 331 times since starting her career in 1983.

Scorsese is also known for classics like ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Casino,’ as well as newer films like ‘The Irishman’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ His stories often center around male characters. Many of his frequent actors are men, like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Kidman is right about her observation about Scorsese but his recent films also give more attention to female characters, like ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ His other films with female leads include ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,’ which won Ellen Burstyn an Oscar, ‘Boxcar Bertha’ with Barbara Hershey, and ‘New York, New York’ with Liza Minnelli.

In 2019, Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ faced criticism for sidelining its key female character, Peggy Sheeran, played by Anna Paquin, who spoke only seven words in the 209-minute film. When asked by a reporter why his films mostly focus on men, Scorsese responded, “If the story doesn’t call for it … it’s a waste of everybody’s time.”

In 2011, Meryl Streep expressed similar thoughts about Scorsese in an interview with The Talks. The actress said, “I would like Martin Scorsese to be interested in a female character once in a while, but I don’t know if I’ll live that long.”

In her Vanity Fair interview, Kidman also mentioned Kathryn Bigelow, Spike Jonze, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Michael Haneke as directors she’d like to work with.
