American civil rights leader and politician, John Lewis died on July 17, 2020, at the age of 80 of pancreatic cancer. After the news spread, many political leaders, musicians, actors, and celebrities paid tributes to Lewis.
As one of them, Oprah Winfrey uploaded a video of John Lewis speaking during an interview between the two about his documentary, ‘John Lewis: Good Trouble’ which was composed of rare archival footage, and shared an emotional tribute for him.
Oprah wrote on Instagram that following the false rumors of John Lewis’ passing she spoke with him. She had told him:
“Thank you for your courage leading the fight for Freedom. My life as it is would not have been possible without you.”
As might be known, Lewis, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, played many key roles in the civil rights movement in the United States.
The media executive Winfrey, continued by saying that she is satisfied for having spoken with him before he passed away:
“I know for sure he heard me. I felt good about that. He understood and was so gracious.
This is one of his last interviews we recently did during the COVID quarantine about his new @johnlewisdoc #GoodTrouble.”
Then she thanked Lewis for all the efforts he gave to make the U.S. more equal:
“Thank you for showing us and teaching us what getting into ‘good trouble’ looks like. 🙏🏽”
