Actor and host Dax Shepard revealed that he was struggling with addiction after 16 years of sobriety, during an episode of his ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast.
Shepard, whose wife is actress Kristen Bell, said that he was in trouble with pain medication, which was prescribed for the motorcycle accident he had experienced a few weeks ago, and accepted that he started to abuse painkillers.
“I go, ‘I have a prescription for this, and I was in a motorcycle accident, and I’m gonna take some too.”
Shepard continued by explaining how he received the painkillers that he took more than allowed:
“I was taking, you know, eight 30s a day, and I know that’s an amount that’s going to result in a pretty bad withdrawal. And I start getting really scared, and I’m starting to feel really lonely. And I just have this enormous secret.”
The actor, who is highly honest with his past addiction issues, stated that he handed over the pills.
“Day one when I’m supposed to step down, I’m like, ‘I wasn’t anticipating that this was already going to feel bad after just one less,’ so I don’t step down the first day, and then I don’t step down the second day. And now I’m really panicking.”
On September 26, he celebrated the 11th day of his sobriety with a post that reads:
“An episode I hoped I’d never have to record, but one I felt I owed to all the beautiful Armcheries who have been on this ride with me for the last couple years. This was Monday, say today is 11.”
