Pauly Shore says he’ll be playing fitness celebrity Richard Simmons in a new movie, but Simmons himself isn’t too happy about it.
Shore recently had his comedy show at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, as part of the ‘Netflix Is a Joke’ festival. He talked about his life and career during this one-and-a-half-hour show. Towards the end, he also touched upon the Simmons movie:
“I’m also gonna be starring in the Richard Simmons biopic… whether he likes it or not, Richard. Just another f*cking bump in my f*cking road.”
The film is being developed by the Wolper Organization and written by Jordan Allen-Dutton.
Simmons Doesn’t Want This Film To Be Made
News that Shore would star as Simmons first came out in January. Simmons quickly responded on Facebook and said he did not give permission for the movie:
“You may have heard they may be doing a movie about me with Pauly Shore. I have never given my permission for this movie. So don’t believe everything you read. I no longer have a manager, and I no longer have a publicist. I just try to live a quiet life and be peaceful. Thank you for all your love and support.”
Shore then responded to Simmons’ concerns at the Sundance Film Festival:
“My come from has always been love. It’s never been vindictive. I’m not Borat. I’m not ‘let’s make fun of someone.’ It’s the opposite. At this point, it’s an unauthorized biopic and they’re made every day. Yes, I want him to put his pixie dust on this and say, ‘Go for it, Pauly.’ It’s Richard being Richard. It’s sensitive. We don’t want to bug him. We want him to be left alone and we don’t want to bug him. We want to pay homage to him and kiss his feet and say he’s done beautiful stuff.”
Simmons is planning his own movie about his life, and Shore thinks that’s great. He also said he could visit Simmons with some comfort food to talk about the movie. Shore actually thinks the more movies about Simmons, the better.
