‘Planet Of The Apes’ Star Reveals What The Real Ending Was Supposed To Be

Freya Allan shared that the movie’s original ending was very different.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ star Freya Allan recently revealed the film’s original ending.

Mae (Freya Allan) sabotages Proximus and his plans for man-made weapons in the final scenes. After this, Noa and the rest of the Eagle Clan head home to rebuild. Mae’s actions result in the deaths of many apes, including those from both Proximus’s followers and the Eagle Clan.

Mae and Noa part ways peacefully in the end, but viewers catch a glimpse of her gun. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Allan confirmed that Mae’s intentions were much clearer in the original version:

“In the scene that I shot, Mae was going there to kill him because he scares her. His intelligence scares her. Mae doesn’t want to kill him, but she feels she has to. Originally, you actually see her pull the gun on Noa, but his back is turned to her. And so you think, ‘Oh, my God, is she about to shoot him?’ Mae is crying as she’s doing it. And then she doesn’t. The minute he mentions Raka’s name, she puts the gun down.”

She Prefers This Version, Though

This original ending made Mae’s conflict and intentions very obvious. But the filmmakers decided to make the ending more subtle in the final cut. Allan admits that she prefers this final version:

“But then in the edit, they wanted it to feel more subtle, and I honestly way prefer what they’ve done with it. It’s so much smarter and really allows you to think more. It doesn’t need to be as obvious as holding up the gun, and it allows you to raise the questions you just asked: Was she going there to kill them, or was it a precaution? So that’s up for you to decide because the scene that I shot was so different.”

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ is currently showing in theaters.
