The Adult Swim cult comedy ‘Rick and Morty’ was approved for two more seasons, so it will now have a 12th season and run until 2029.
The announcement was made at a New York Comic Con panel. It included series co-creator Dan Harmon, showrunner Scott Marder, and some main voice actors from the show.
“Nobody wants a universe without ‘Rick and Morty.’ Fortunately, the list of places to go remains infinite,” Harmon said in a statement.
The series started in 2013 and was approved for up to season 10. However, animation takes a long time, so season eight has not aired yet. It is set to come out in 2025, and one episode will include a sneak peek that was shown at the NYCC panel.
“From Season One, ‘Rick and Morty’ set a new standard in adult animation and has shown no signs of stopping,” Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen also noted. “Dan, Scott and the rest of the immensely talented team behind ‘Rick and Morty’ are constantly outdoing themselves and I’ll be joining the millions of fans around the world in looking forward to more adventures in the years to come.”
The renewal news comes after the Emmy-winning comedy, Adult Swim’s top show, had some big changes behind the scenes. Series co-creator Justin Roiland was removed after a 2023 NBC News report said he faced felony domestic violence charges from a 2020 incident.
He was later cleared of those charges due to not having enough evidence, but Adult Swim had already ended their relationship with him. This included replacing his voice for the characters Rick and Morty.
In September of that year, NBC News released another report with nine claims of Justin Roiland’s misconduct, including sexual harassment and sexual assault. Roiland denied these claims. He reportedly used his link to ‘Rick and Morty’ and its popularity on social media and dating apps to meet women.
