During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Rob Lowe shared a memory of working with Tom Cruise. They used to work out and jog together, but his favorite memory was their boxing session. The actor said:
“He’s so competitive that we used to box in the hallway of the hotel we were staying at during ‘Outsiders.’ So much testosterone. We’re 18-year-old guys stuck on location. So we would have headgear, and we’d have mouthpieces in, but we would legitimately spar.”
Lowe recalled having thin arms while Cruise was very muscular. Despite this, Lowe managed to land a perfect punch on Cruise as he noted:
“I rang his bell, and the next I knew, I woke up — I was coming to, on the floor. And he, like, completely knocked me out.”
The actor added:
“His eyes just went black, but that’s the stuff we did. That’s what guys do. Like ‘Fight Club.'”
Lowe’s Another Memory With Cruise
Lowe was 17 when he met Cruise while filming ‘The Outsiders’ in 1983. He told Eisen that he played Sodapop Curtis, and Cruise played Steve Randle. In April 2020, Lowe shared another memory of Cruise on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert. The actor revealed the auditions for ‘The Outsiders’:
“All of the L.A. people survived the L.A. auditions, and then the hand-picked people had to go to New York to face the New York version. So it was me and Tom Cruise and Emilio [Estevez] and C. Thomas Howell. [It was the] first time I ever stayed at The Plaza Hotel, and we check-in, and Tom finds out that we’re sharing a room and just goes ballistic [laughs].”
Lowe wasn’t upset by his costar’s reaction. He thought it was funny and liked Cruise’s dedication. He recognized that Cruise’s focus has always led to success. Cruise is reportedly already filming his eighth ‘Mission Impossible’ movie after major delays.
