Robert Downey Jr. Still Wants To Return As Iron Man: It’s In My DNA

The actor left the MCU in 2019 but is open to making a comeback.

Robert Downey Jr. recently talked about the chances of his return to the MCU as Tony Stark/Iron Man after the Multiverse Saga’s introduction. He told Jodie Foster during a chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors:

“It’s just crazily in my DNA. Probably the most like-me character I’ve ever played, even though he’s way cooler than I am. I’ve become surprisingly open-minded to the idea.”

Is Iron Man’s Return Possible?

Iron Man sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The 2019 film’s writers, the Russo brothers, are not sure how and if it’s possible to bring him back. Anthony Russo previously told GameRadar+:

“I don’t know how they would do it. I don’t know what the road to that would be [laughs].”

Joe added:

“I mean we closed that book so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.”

The Studio Doesn’t Want To Undo His Death

It’s possible to see RDJ return as an alternative version of Tony Stark in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as the upcoming film will likely follow a Multiversal war. The hero may also appear in AI form to help Iron Heart like in the comics.

The actor is willing to reprise his role either way, but according to Kevin Feige, there are no plans to bring him back yet. The head of Marvel spoke of Tony Stark’s death with Vanity Fair last December:

“We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again. We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”

Some Heroes Are Rising From Dead For The MCU

Meanwhile, some of the other dead heroes are joining the MCU. The X-Men are coming back with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine/Logan in the upcoming ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’

Wolverine originally died in the Fox franchise’s ‘Logan’ saving Dafne Keen’s X-23 and other young mutants. It’s likely that Keen will reprise her role in the new Marvel film to convince him to be a hero. A scene in the trailer where Jackman’s character told a ‘kid’ off-screen that he’s ‘no hero’ hinted at that.

X-Force from ‘Deadpool 2’ are also returning although most of them seemingly died at the end of the 2018 movie.
