Ryan Reynolds had to meet the famous Madonna to get her permission to use her song ‘Like a Prayer’ in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
This meeting took place with the movie’s director, Shawn Levy, and was a big moment for both of them.
Reynolds shared at a recent SiriusXM Town Hall that getting Madonna’s approval was a big deal because she rarely lets anyone use her song, especially ‘Like a Prayer’:
“Also, let’s preface it with the fact that they don’t license — Madonna doesn’t just license the song, and particularly that song has not been licensed. So it was a big deal to ask for it and certainly a bigger deal to use it… We went over and met with her and showed her how it was being used and where and why.”
She Gave Advice For The Scene
Madonna agreed to let them use the song and gave some helpful feedback on improving the scene:
“She gave a great note. My God, she watched it and, I’m not kidding, just was like, ‘You need to do this, this, and this in this moment.’ And damn it, if she wasn’t like spot-on and right.”
Reynolds says they made the changes she suggested within 48 hours.
Levy described the experience of meeting Madonna as feeling like they were meeting royalty. Reynolds even joked about being nervous and unsure if he should call her just Madonna:
“I even asked someone who worked with her — I was like, ‘Am I allowed to just say Madonna?’ Like, ‘Hello, Madonna?’ ‘I’m f*cking Ryan.’ That was one of the great thrills of my life.”
The movie’s soundtrack is filled with other famous songs too. It includes tracks from *NSYNC, Avril Lavigne, and even Hugh Jackman. Jackman sings ‘The Greatest Show’ from his 2017 film ‘The Greatest Showman.’
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is set to hit theaters on July 26. You can watch the interview below.
