A recent report from Daniel Richtman claimed that Sam Rockwell is in talks to reprise his character in the upcoming ‘Armor Wars’ movie, where he would star alongside Don Cheadle’s War Machine. On ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ Rockwell addressed these rumors, saying:
“Well, I’m waiting for the phone call. I haven’t gotten the phone call. It’s been a while.”
About his possible comeback, he added:
“Listen, I’m in, dude.”
Justin Hammer’s Return Is Highly Possible
Rockwell voiced a variant of Tony Stark’s rival in an episode of ‘What If…?’ Season 2, where the character invades Avengers Tower and fights Happy ‘The Freak’ Hogan in the Hulkbuster armor. In 2022, he shared an interest in rejoining the MCU as a member of ‘Thunderbolts.’
Asked if he’d join a project like the upcoming film centering Marvel’s antiheroes, the actor told ‘The Discourse’ podcast:
“Yeah, definitely. I would be into that. [‘Thunderbolts’] sounds cool… [Hammer’s] fun, he’s a real Lex Luthor.”
Details From The ‘Armor Wars’ Movie
Marvel Studios is reportedly looking to find a director for ‘Armor Wars’ in early 2024, aiming to start production in 2025 for a release around 2026 or 2027.
Initially planned as a series, ‘Armor Wars’ has been reimagined as a movie. Marvel producer Nate Moore discussed this decision, explaining the challenges and vision behind making it a film:
“When you’re talking about a show that wants to be about seeing all the cool armors and Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors and, sort of, the legacy of Tony Stark? That became kind of cost-prohibitive to do as a show.”
We’ll See More Of War Machine
The film’s plot and storyline are still under wraps, but we know the project will delve more into Cheadle’s War Machine. The Marvel actor has shared insights into what fans can expect from ‘Armor Wars,’ especially about his character, on Instagram:
“The fun part about it is that we’re going to continue to explore Rhodey and – in some ways for the first time – get to see what makes him tick. We understand his physical challenges, but we haven’t really yet dug into a lot of his emotional and psychological [challenges].”
Yassir Lester will be the writer for the upcoming project. Walton Goggins will star alongside Cheadle as Sonny Burch from ‘Ant-Man And The Wasp.’
