Samuel L. Jackson Explains His Concerns About Marvel’s Nine-Picture Offer

The actor wasn’t sure how the studio would be able to fulfill such a long-term commitment.

Samuel L. Jackson appeared in over a dozen Marvel projects since making his debut as Nick Fury in 2008’s ‘Iron Man.’ But he had doubts about completing his nine-picture deal with the studio at the beginning.

“I knew I had a nine-picture deal,” the actor recently told GQ magazine. “Kevin [Feige] said that, ‘We’re going to offer you a nine-picture deal.’”

He shared his thoughts from back then, “How long do you have to stay alive to make nine movies? It’s not the quickest process in the world. I didn’t know they were going to make nine movies in like two and a half years [Laughs]. It’s just kind of crazy! Oh shit, I’m using up my contracts. It worked out.”

Though his contract technically ended with 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel,’ Jackson has continued playing Nick Fury in the MCU. He reprised the role in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ the same year and returned in 2023’s ‘The Marvels.’

The actor previously said he’d be open to playing the S.H.I.E.L.D. director until his 80s. “I could be the Alec Guinness of Marvel movies,” he joked in a 2019 chat with The Hollywood Reporter.

Most recently, Jackson appeared in Disney+’s ‘Secret Invasion’ miniseries. While the show’s writing and visuals drew criticism, his performance earned positive feedback.
