Sasha Calle Breaks Silence On Supergirl Recasting

New DC Studios leaders chose a different actress to play the character.

Sasha Calle shared her feelings about being replaced as Supergirl after her debut in ‘The Flash.’

The actress first appeared as Supergirl last year. She told The Hollywood Reporter that she originally signed a multi-film contract. “I was so deeply in love with that role,” she admitted. “I had a conversation about her future many times. When I signed onto that, it was for a multiple-picture deal. That’s a common thing when you sign onto a franchise. So it was very heartbreaking for me, and it was very confusing.”

She was excited about the potential future of her character, but DC Studios decided to recast the role after new leaders took charge.

Calle explained how much she loved playing Supergirl and saw herself as a strong fit for the role. “It’s been said that a queer Latina girl like me couldn’t be Supergirl. But I was, and no one can take that away from me. That is the most important thing for me; I did something that mattered. And whether you saw yourself represented in me or not, a lot of people really connected with her and loved her.”

She stated that she looks back on the role with gratitude. “That was a rough experience,” Calle recalled. “So I look forward to working with people in this industry who see my value and who are excited to work with me. I have so much to give. I love my job so much, and I’m so excited to start kicking *ss again. I love action movies. Whether it’s supernatural or not, I am just so excited to continue doing those things, and I know that I will do those things, with or without that role. I look back at it as something super beautiful.”

This decision to replace Calle came after James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed as co-heads of the new DC Studios. The two have been making changes to the DC franchise like casting ‘House of the Dragon’ star Milly Alcock as the new Supergirl. The shift left Calle feeling undervalued and eager to work with people who appreciate her talent.

Calle’s time as Supergirl was brief, but it led to a close friendship with Leslie Grace. Grace was cast as Batgirl, but her movie was canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery. Calle says Grace’s support helped her through losing her role.
