Scammed By Sony? Sydney Sweeney Believes She’s In The MCU After ‘Madame Web’

After her role in ‘Madame Web,’ Sweeney was excited to be part of the Marvel family. However, the film is not part of Marvel but Sony’s own superhero universe.

Sydney Sweeney recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her role in ‘Madame Web,’ saying she is happy to join Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) with the film. However, fans believe she’s ‘scammed’ by Sony as there is something Sweeney should know about: the movie is not part of the MCU.

According to the interview, Sweeney has been under the impression she had joined the ranks of MCU with her latest film, ‘Madame Web.’ Asked about her excitement to join the franchise, she responded:

“That I can’t talk about it. It’s so hard because I talk so much … It was amazing, It was incredible, I’m so excited … I’m just really honored to be a part of this.”

However, the movie is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) instead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Fans Questioned If She Was Scammed By Sony

Upon hearing about the interview on Twitter, the fan community reacted quickly, with many expressing pity for Sweeney’s situation.

Some of them speculated that Sony might not have made the differences between the SSU and MCU clear, not only to Sweeney but also to other actors such as Matt Smith, Adam Scott, and Dakota Johnson, who starred in similar Sony productions:

“I bet actors like Matt Smith, Adam Scott, and Dakota Johnson all thought they were joining the MCU when they signed up for their Sony Spidermanless Spider-Verse films…”

Accusations continued to flow, with one fan pointing out:

“Sony be scamming these poor actresses.”

Another wrote, claiming Sony probably lied to her and others:

“I know everyone’s dunking on her for not knowing the difference between the Sony movies and the MCU… but I would not put it past Sony to lie to actors and tell them it’s an MCU movie to get them to sign the dotted line.”

Adding to the controversy, Madame Web has been critically panned, with a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s box office performance mirrored its critical reception, marking it as the worst opening for an SSU film to date.

Dakota Johnson, featured in the lead, recently revealed her lack of familiarity with Spider-Man lore, especially the Tom Holland-led movies. This sparked further debate about her seriousness in approaching the role.
