‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ star Simu Liu has some good news for fans: the sequel is definitely still happening.
Liu recently came across a fan’s comment on Threads. The fan was saying Marvel abandoned the film and its fans:
“I feel like Marvel has abandoned the Shang-Chi fan base. There has been no effort by the studio to get the sequel filming or even include the character in other Marvel films. Frustrating as hell.”
It seems no specific release date has been set yet, but Liu assured everyone that they are working on it:
“I proooomiss[sic] it’s happening.”
The First Film Was a Big Hit
‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ was released in September 2021. The film made over $430 million worldwide during the pandemic. It also made more money during its opening on Labor Day weekend than any other movie before it.
The movie hinted at ‘Shang-Chi’s future with Wong, Bruce Banner, and Captain Marvel in a special scene after the credits.
Marvel Studios and Disney announced they were making a second ‘Shang-Chi’ movie in December 2021. Destin Daniel Cretton signed on to direct the movie. Liu confirmed that Cretton is indeed working on the sequel:
“Destin is such a special filmmaker and we’re very happy to have him on the sequel. So he’ll be working on that, and we’re really excited to see what he comes up with. I think he’s going to do a brilliant job.”
When ‘Shang-Chi 2’ will come out is still unclear due to scheduling issues. Liu hinted that it might be released sometime between May 2026 and May 2027.
