Shawn Levy Had Doubts About Whether Anyone Would Watch ‘Stranger Things’

Levy decided to join the Netflix show despite thinking people wouldn’t watch it.

Shawn Levy served as an executive producer for ‘Stranger Things’ since it debuted on Netflix in 2016. He recently spoke about the show, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, and Caleb McLaughlin, on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’:

“I mean, literally it was this script that some people had read, and everyone was like, ‘Well, wait, it’s a show starring kids that isn’t necessarily for kids?’ And it just was kind of going overlooked.”

The director recalled how he got involved with the project by saying:

“And it came across my desk, and when I first read it, I was like, ‘I’m a movie director; I don’t even do TV.’ And I read this thing, and it was just too good. I didn’t know if anyone would watch it, but I knew it was cool. I knew it was special. And so, I said to the Duffer brothers, ‘Guys, I don’t know what my role on it is gonna be, but this has to get in the world. So, I’ll do whatever you need to help get this into the world.’ And here we are making Season 5.”

The Producer Teases About The Next Season

Netflix announced that production on the final season of ‘Stranger Things’ began with a cast photo in January. The picture featured Brown, David Harbour, and Winona Ryder as well as Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, and Sadie Sink.

Levy teased about the upcoming finale in an interview with People a month later:

“If I was a fan who had nothing to do with ‘Stranger Things,’ I would presume that the final season was going to be big in scale. But I’d also want to note that the heart and soul of that show, which is its characters, are intact and are as central as spectacle. And indeed, they are.”

There’s More To Come In The ‘Stranger Things’ Universe

Maya Hawke recently confirmed that the upcoming season would be larger in scale than previous ones with eight ‘very long’ episodes. She told the ‘Podcrushed’ podcast:

“We’re making, basically, eight movies. Season 4 and Season 5 are very connected. Season 4 had a Part I and Part II because they separated them, so the last two episodes came out at a different time, which is unusual for streaming. But this is its own season. It is a continuation, but it’s the finale. And it has been a long time since last season.”

Netflix announced new projects related to the ‘Stranger Things’ universe despite confirming Season 5 as the finale. An untitled animated spin-off series as well as a prequel play titled ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ are currently in the works.
